A former ward of the state, Jason Ferris is fiercely protective of his carefully guarded private life. When he's felled by a rogue lawn ornament at a Christmas party, Jason finds himself in the care of his first and most devastating love-- dark, dangerous, and equally damaged Lt. Robb Sharpe.
Newly returned from years away in the military, Robb's homecoming isn't exactly the stuff of fairytales. Now thrust together after a ten year hiatus, Jason and Robb discover that perhaps some things are worth waiting for.

I will tell you a secret. Most people I know think that "Silent Night" is my favorite thing about Christmas. It is emotional, quiet, all the meanings of Christmas in one song. But my real favorite thing, and you have to keep this just between us, is "The Little Drummer Boy". I remember as a kid seeing the stop action special on tv, and the little drummer boy all alone, playing his little heart out for the Boy King. And I thought, even then, that's me - alone, a little different, with nothing much to offer. You see, even then, before I knew what "gay" was, I knew something was different about me and it was something only God would understand. And Christmas was an especially hard time, since I never really thought I fit in with my large family.
And when I read this stunning, haunting and hopeful story, I was right back there as a kid, watching a thing of beauty and instinctively understanding that it was speaking to me, right to my heart.
Jason is an orphan, abandoned by his mother at six years old and raised in the foster care system. He learned the ancient art of origami from his mother, and now uses it to calm his soul. He has never really fit in, but he craves a family, just doesn't know how to do it. He is friends with the Sharpe family, and shared one night with Robb, the older son, before he left ten years ago.
Robb is back from his posting in the Army, home for Christmas, damaged both in body and spirit. He doesn't really want to be there, but the need to see Jason one more time rides him.
When an accident at the Sharpe Christmas party requires that someone watch over Jason overnight, Robb steps in and helps. But will their reunion bring them closer, or will the ten year absence prove too much to overcome?
To say I fell in love with these two damaged, vulnerable and solitary men would be an understatement. Ms. Gregg has done what so few can do - created fully realized, believable, sympathetic and wonderful characters in a very short novella. Robb is broken, home from the Army and in obvious physical and mental distress. And Jason, such a lovely young man, his heart hurting at every turn but capable of creating such beauty (read the description of his apartment and try not to be amazed and shattered) but so very very alone.
And after these two men come together one more time, at Christmas, Jason understands that he has to open his heart and let Robb go, to heal, and to hopefully come back to him. Someday. And Robb leaves. And then the small cranes start to fly back home, a promise.
Like Jason's origami, this simple little tale folds itself into a crane. A promise. The promise of love and reunion and family and Christmas.
If I don't get anything else for Christmas this year, my heart is happy and my soul nourished by this sweet sweet lullaby.

Simple Gifts A Cornwall Novella Book 2 edition by LB Gregg Romance eBooks Reviews
Spending Christmas with his best friend's family is not Jason Ferris's idea of a good time, especially when he finds out her brother Robb will be there. Jason and Robb have a heated past but haven't seen each other in years. Inflatable snow globes, a head injury, and a black out rekindle a flame, but is the simmering heat between them enough to last this time?
LB Gregg gives enough background about Jason and Robb in Simple Gifts to make you fall for them and want their happily ever after as desperately as they do, while still keeping you guessing. They're complex, engaging characters. Robb's past is still a bit of mystery. While I didn't need anything more to make the story work, I liked him so much I wanted more. A pretty clear picture of who Jason is and what's going on in his life is painted. He was dealt a bad hand, but he turned his life around. Jason and Robb are both struggling with the pain of their pasts, but their future is bright. Simple Gifts is a poignant story laced with humor. There's angst, heartache, and some beautiful origami too.

Jason Ferris is a very private person, so when his best friend, Sunny drags him to her parent's house for a Christmas party, he feels very uncomfortable. But that is just the beginning. When he gets to the party, he finds out Sunny's brother Lt. Robb Sharpe is home from overseas. Jason had a major crush on Robb in high school, where they even started a physical relationship before things fell apart and Robb left for the Army. Jason immediately feels awkward and shy and the only thing he can think about is escaping the party and getting back to the bar he owns.
Robb is home, but not happy. His time in the army changed him. He is thin, his voice is messed up from smoke and he has seen some very bad things.
When Jason does find an escape route, he trips in the front yard full of Christmas decorations, and hits his head really hard. And guess who is there to take him to the hospital?
I always enjoy LB Gregg's books, and this one has such a sweet overtone to it, which surprised me because it doesn't start out that way. Jason grew up in the foster care system, so he doesn't understand what being in a family really means. When Robb's mom gives him a stocking at the party, the emotion that overtakes him is foreign to him. No one, except for Sunny ever reaches out their love to Jason. Robb on the other hand is home and is a changed man. Gaunt is the word Jason plays over and over in his head when he looks at him.
In true LB Gregg fashion, there is much sarcasm in this book that makes me smile and smile. But, what surprises me is what transpires towards the middle of the book. And this is a very short novella, but it really felt like a full story. I don't want to give too much away, but Jason is obsessed with origami. It is his passion, his private world. But Robb understands him, and starts doing this really sweet, symbolic thing for Jason that will just steal your heart.
A really cute, uplifting romantic story that is well done in such a short novella.
Simple Gifts is a wonderful novella; a sweet story about 2 people finding each other (again), forgivness and lawn art.
LB Gregg delivers again. Not much else to say, worth every penny.
love this book.
Unlike the first in the series, this one had two very credible MCs, a decent back story, and a wonderful flow. Very nice slow burn.
I bought this a while ago, and while short, it has an intense burst of feeling that just works. Both Jason and Robb are well drawn characters. Jason's inner voice is the narrator, and he's witty and self-deprecating. He was infatuated with Robb years ago and over a Christmas they reconnect... I liked the star system Jason had created and I loved the origami motif...
Even though it's short, it's definitely worth it, I rate it a keeper and a reread.
